Graphic design itself is heavily tied to digital media. It’s an essential component of our practice, but as educators, are we leveraging technology enough to push graphic design pedagogy to the next level? What are some innovative models? This panel will be looking for presentations that examine methodological, theoretical, and practical implications of the marriage of technology and graphic design pedagogy.
Increases in bandwidth and improved compression technologies, coupled with cost effective hardware and software, have made digital media an ever more integral part of our students lives. There are new opportunities to use technology as a delivery system to create vibrant learning experiences. We will be reviewing trends that challenge traditional studio instructional methods and work to change, perhaps even evolve, the very relationship between student and teacher.
We are looking for case studies that examine:
• Innovative use of Information Technology (IT) in the classroom and for distance learning
• Synchronous and/or asynchronous communication, both in terms instructional design and results
• The relationship between student learning preferences/styles and technology-based delivery systems
• Student-led versus teacher-led learning programs, as well as group and individualized mentoring, and the impact technology has on these activities
• The impact of web-based and other interactive learningware on educational outcomes
• The different skills and competencies required of faculty to use these new learning technologies
• Collaborative relationships that create integrated media courses— content specialists (subject matter experts) + instructional designers (educational experts) + technical facilitators (IT experts)
• Transitioning traditional course material and presentation into computer mediated ones
Consider Models for:
• Learning Materials, both static and dynamic
• Social networking & online learning communities
• Synchronous and/or Asynchronous Communications
• Learning technologies (hardware & software)
• Multi-media in the classroom
• Streaming audio & video presentations
• Electronic whiteboards
• Online testing & self-evaluation
• Satellite technologies & access to experts outside the classroom
• Class management systems
How does the use of integrated media in graphic design pedagogy impact:
• Student motivation and accountability
• Instructional requirements
• Teacher productivity
• Delivery of course content
• Adding time for application and practice of course concepts
• Peer to peer transfer of information
• Difference in learning styles of students
• Student grading & evaluation
• Cost implications of these new technologies
