These are my final....(ahem, other than acutally making) versions of the Velvet Revolution characters. These would all be handmade here in the CZ, and they would be collected materials that would make up the clothing. The stitching would be exposed, and give a materiality and texture to the fronts of each. There would be consistency in how some of the more specfic characters such as Václav Havel, Jan Palach (illustrated here), Jan Opeltal, would be made in multiple. Ideally the demonstrators would change and never look the same, this would make for a collective group of all different figures, giving each a personality. The Revolution was about the masses of people that came together, and by varying the look of each figure they would begin to echo that important role of the common people.
The backs would be made up of portions of original posters, silkscreened or printed on the fabric. The full poster would be represented on the back of the information card that would accompany each figure...err (ugh) doll. The intent of these characters would be to represent them in a way that would be inviting to a 'souvenir shopper' and teach them something important about the recent history of Prague and the Czech Republic.
